The First Chakra or Root Chakra (Muladhara) symbolizes the body, foundation, survival, family/tribe, home, health, trust, prosperity. When this Chakra is affected, as it is for so many of us now facing issues related to foundation and survival, the energy moves up to the head (note: this is the case for people who experienced trauma at a young age and even in the womb - it's a way to check out or escape).
When you disconnect from your body you disconnect from your core and therefore "source" -- as Judith puts it, you "become spiritually homeless" ( 54).
Â
It's important to bring energy down to the Root Chakra (feet and legs) so that we can feel, absorb, integrate and then release our emotions. A few mantras for the Root Chakra are "The earth supports me and meets my needs," "I love my body and trust its wisdom," and "I am immersed in
abundance."
Â
In my classes, I often focus on grounding and reconnecting to the body via purposeful linking of breathing and movement and tuning into the transitions as we move from pose to pose - we need this practice now more than ever.
